Every time I hear her sing her voice touches my spirit leave me in tears of joy! I can listen to her all day because her voice is just that soothing! When Cynthia sings this song she can draw you into the song and make you visualize seeing Harriet freeing the slaves to freedom!
As a professional songwriter, I have enormous respect for the catalogue of work by Sir Elton John (and Bernie Taupin). With that said, THIS song – STAND UP – completely captures the heart and soul of a black spiritual, combined with Cynthia Erivo's passionate (and flawless) vocal, SHOULD have been the Academy Award winning song. For those who feel that Elton deserved to win due to his legacy, I refer you back to 1995. He has NOT been passed over by the Academy, as that year, he won for THE LION KING – which was, in my opinion, vastly better music than the song nominated this year from "Rocket Man" …
MY OPINION: the "movers and shakers" in Hollywood (still, the older white men) have committed yet another racial injustice
