In 1973, I worked for my state forestry department, and volunteered to fight fires in Oregon and Idaho during an especially bad fire season.. One fire also involved an old cut over area with stumps that were very old and dry. This was in summer, and the humidity was very, very low, in an area that did not get much rain, anyway.
During "mop up" I was assigned to make sure that fire did not cross our fire lines, and to watch for any fires that would pop up.
There were some areas that had not burned, so still had leaves and pine needles on the ground.
As I watched, little smolders of smoke would slowly start to burn, seemingly from nowhere!
This happened several times, and I realized fire was working its way through the old dry dead roots of the old stumps!
Being from wet Louisiana, this was certainly a surprising novelty!
