  1. I personally thought it was fun to hear all about the nerdy numbers and reasons why they are doing things a certain way. I am looking forward to the PS5, and while I don't think it will be as flashy on paper as Microsofts X series I think it will be a fun machine to use. I think they did clarify that the majority of the PS4 library will be available on the PS5, just not at launch. Thanks for the video Johnny!

  2. I wonder if its possible that Sony will actually do full backwards compatibility and have also some secret up their sleeves which they havent revealed yet. As if this whole road to ps5 was in a way like a mild version of internet trolling. Virus overshadowed whole world too and Sony probably wants to wait a bit longer for things to cool down and get full attention with the reveal.

  3. It was weird and not digging what PS5 offers. Surely some games will sell it down the line, but I was hoping for them to revolutionize VR, and don't know if this machine is up for it. Just feels like Sony fallen off a cliff since 2016. Yeah you talk the games, but in terms of communication and doing events, they've epic failed nearly all of them. Which only is an issue cause Xbox didn't hide in a hole for 2 years and built up the community and had clear messaging for years now.

  4. My thoughts on virtual surround and HRTF:
Most likely a picture will not be sufficient to simulate audio immersion. Inside the ear is a curved structure that is designed to resonate at a wide range of sound frequencies, detected by little hairs that vibrate when that resonance reaches a certain threshold. The more they vibrate, the more intense (volume) you hear the noise. Unless they did an ear internal 3D scan, the outer/superficial ear picture won't tell the whole story of how you percieve noises. Plus as you age, the shape of your internal ear may change, plus over time or abuse, the structues of the ear become damaged, and it would be harder to hear particular frequencies. There was that thing a few years ago, about this mosquito noise app that was annoying to certain people, because others could not hear it.

What I think will happen with HRTF customization:
The sound needs to be user-calibrated, and I think the PS team will gamify the experience. You'll probably control some avatar in a dark or mist-shrouded open area, and various sounds will be heard. Then you'll be instructed to turn your avatar so that the sound is directly in front (balance L/R), and walk towards it, no matter how loud or quiet the sound is (perception), and STOP walking when you no longer hear the sound (imperception) – or even walk towards the direction of the noise without turning (testing virtual surround localization). The trick is that the PS5 will keep playing finer and more quieter sounds, and it will know which frequencies are audible or not, based on your reaction time. But until the testing is over, it probably won't tell you what errors you had ("hearing" something that wasn't actually generated, or missing a quiet sound because it was out of your range). Based on your test results, the PS5 can easily generate a custom audio profile that would match the intended reference for virtual surround. The beauty of this, is that you can make various profiles based on whatever audio hardware you use: TV speakers, soundbar, home theatre, bluetooth speaker, headphones. All will need to be calibrated separately per case (like one for speakers, and another for headphones), but would be the best possible virtual surround for the audio equipment you have, and the room environment you play in. Just like we won't all have 4k HDR low-latency gaming TVs, not all of us will have 7.2.2 surround speaker setups, or deep-isolating noise-cancelling headphones, or an acoustically neutral room to play in.

Custom frequency calibration is a real thing, and does wonders for listening to music. I can only salivate at the prospect of true user calibrated immersion in my games, and playing 4KHDR Blu-Ray movies (or even just streaming my Netflix!) on the PS5 … if you haven't guessed, I'm one of those audiophile guys that gush over expensive audio equipment and peripherals. Check out things like the the Mimi app (iphone, not sure if they have Android or others), and the Nura headphones, both of which I've tested and love today. Music and movie sound effects that go through a calibration phase sound more impactul and dynamic, and all without fatiguing or overpowering your ears. This is because the overall loudness/volume settings are actually LOWER because only the parts that need boosting are actually raised to your needs.

  5. Johnny, the presentation was reserved for the GDC conference but since that was cancelled they decided to use the recording for the public. That's why there was so much high-technical talk. I think we will see more around May.

  6. I kept telling people even when the PS3 was out, that games and tech were not being pushed even halfway to where they could have been. It would not have been revolutionary in the truest sense, not broken the bank, but hell, imagine how much better things would have lookedand played if advancments in gaming alone, which really pushed all other tech over the last 40 years, began at an earlier time. Imagine if the first games, instead of coming out in 1972, came out in 1952. The Magnavox Odyssey was first prototyped back then in the mid 50s, but kept being shelved, then enchanced, then shelves for nearly 20 years. So I am not looking forward to consoles anymore, since the Ps4 and xbox one were disappointing. Hell if you lok at the specs for the PS3 alone it had some better parts just be some numbers than the Ps4, and it was jamp packed to play the first three consoles worth of hardware. lol *smfh * Expect less, without realizing it, and you, sheepmanity, get what you pay for. >,;,<

  7. Same here. It's all about the games. That's why I've always stuck with Sony. The true 3-D audio being done with the Tempest Engine is a far bigger deal than people are giving it credit for. I don't think people understand exactly what it means. It's ray tracing for audio. It's a massive improvement.

  8. I'm only down for PSVR2, which they didn't really talk about and that was disappointing. I will always prefer Nintendo's hybrid platform for general games due to my busy lifestyle + accessibility, and I will prefer Xbox for big budget games that I only care to play a few of per year. Hope Sony puts serious effort into PSVR2, though seems like it won't launch until atleast a year after.

  9. Wait, when did they say it was easier to program for and wasn't the top 100 PS4 games would be compatible would run on the PS5… Come on, you fell asleep and in your subconscious thoughts they were saying, what you mentioned ?
