  1. My problem is I bought macbook air 2020 intel version. And I was thinking they not gonna change macbook air, and I was wrong.

  2. We have to see real world application performance first. Synthetic benchmarks nearly always favour ARM based designs as they rely more on straight line number crunching which RISC based chips are really good at. Throw in some corners, like Disk IO, multitasking, etc, and the CISC based chips have more instructions to do that in less CPU cycles. I'll need to see them running real applications before I'm going anywhere near one. The whole Apple presentation was exceedingly vague with graphs with no numbers, and never comparing it with any device or chip in particular.

    There's no doubt though for the average home user, these new ARM chips are going to be super compelling as the old Macbook Air wasn't that a great number cruncher and had pretty poor graphics. Not so sure about the Pro users though. I think they're going to hit a performance ceiling that the high end Intel chips will still beat. Also, as a Pro, I really don't want a laptop I can't upgrade or swap out parts. Literally nothing is upgradable in these ARM laptops as it's all on one chip. I say Let's compare a $999 Macbook Air with a $999 PC laptop and then we'll know if their claims are real or not. I think the big win will be efficiency for sure. Performance wise however, I'm a little more sceptical and think it's going to be much tighter than the presentation suggests.

    As for desktop CPUs where efficiency isn't really a factor, and raw performance is, I think we'll have to wait for an entirely different chip from Apple.

    As a person who's livelihood relies on reliable kit, the old motto 'Never buy Version 1.0 of anything' is ringing loudly in my ears. I hear Big Sur is melting lots of musicians audio gear right now.

  3. Shame on Apple Marketing PR for twisting definitions to make things appear more than they are, no wonder they refused to release the test rigs used for those % boasts, it's all their in the small print after you decipher it.

    The key is their twisted definition of what an "Integrated Graphics System" is. Traditionally that term referred to having both the CPU & GPU dies on the same socket. Apple took that definition and redefined it to include not only the CPU & GPU die but also the machines memory subsystem. Thus rebranding what would be referred to traditionally as an "Embedded System" into what they are mistakenly calling an "Integrated Graphics System"

    When you realize this definition shenanigan and than compare current market embedded systems to the M1 their marketing claims make perfect sense.

    TLDR: Apple was redefining an industry term to mislead consumers into believing the M1 outperformed graphically vs integrated gpu systems (such as AMDs Ryzen/Radeon powered APU) when it only outperformed embedded systems.

  4. love how everyone ignores that Microsoft has had an ARM-based Surface for a while now. The killer feature for Apple is that the App Store provides a lot of ARM-based apps ready on day one. The real test will be the GPU performance. As it stands today the iMac Pro and Mac Pro and probably the MBP 16 will benchmark better the M1. But, we all darn well that Apple already has an M2 early chip in testing and likely has an M3 in the development. They could break off the GPU into a dedicated 64-128-256 core chip and seat it right next to the Mx chip.

  5. I've been watching more and more proprietary chips designed for very specific use cases over the last decade. Flips on its head the notion that you buy Intel/AMD X86 because of the massive volume and cheapness. But Apple has the volume so they can afford their own customer ships.

  6. AMD is still going to be in the lead for performance. In 2021 AMD will release the zen 4 laptop stuff which will have a significant uplift from their current lineup.
    Apple said faster then 98% of laptops made in the last year that last 2% is going to be AMD laptops. Knowing this, we can say that by the time the M1 is released AMD will be ramping up to release its next lineup of CPU's which will be absolutely faster then the M1 – oh, and then you have 5nm zen 4 coming in 2022.. AMD is going to be leading the game for good minute.

  7. lololol this means nothing to the PC industry this chip isn't x86! These people don't know what they are talking about, comparing apples to chicken.

  8. This is disruptive technology. It will work. Its possible to use emulators on this platform to even run Windows programs besides older Mac programs. Virtual systems can be place on this platform and in that environment run other software. Seeing the concept is all in one chip is very compelling as its efficient and allow for in chip modules by sharing resources and closeness allows for that speed and power, something like movement to CNS of a person. Garden's theory of mind suggests neural modules that specialize and share resources to enhance brain function which the mind occupies and runs on. It will change the game, its disruptive and they are there first in a real way with the rest now going to have go back to the drawing table and play catch up. Lastly looking at the M1 Chip is putting the finger on the scale for finally AI chip, hence Gardner's Frames of mind.

  9. I bought one, an MB Air. My expectation is that it will be a snappy super light but sturdy laptop with a fantastic selection of apps and the best development platform there is. My expectation is that it will be the fastest fanless laptop until apple replaces it. I think it will outperform many "gaming" laptops and it will be comical how much more power those take just to lose. AMD recently showed APUs that were quite impressive in compute/power -I bet this M1 chip beats the AMD by more than AMD beat Intel. It is still very early stages, but I also expect that real apps that are compiled for Mac and X86 and android will already run faster on this M1. I don't expect the hard core gaming crowd to embrace Mac anytime soon but that is just because of the closed environment and legal standoff playing out. There will be iOS game companies that see their chance to beat the titans by embracing Mac sooner. When gaming finally goes to VR/AR Apple will be dominant.
