On Extra Mythology we’ve been covering the myth of the Trojan War recorded in the Iliad, but that’s all it is right? There’s no way a massive war like that was actually fought. Well… yes and no. The Trojan War might not have unfolded the way Homer’s muses sing with the Trojan Horse, Achilles, Agamemnon or Hector, BUT there was a real, historical Troy! How exactly did we find it? That’s a story in and of itself and it all begins with a man named Schliemann.
It was cosmic coincidence that this video is airing right after our series on the Iliad, so the beginning material might be a bit familiar. So we’ll cut up the video into:
00:00 The Trojan War Myth
04:27 Uncovering Historical Troy

3:31 Hector: You just got HECTORED!!!!!!
There is no consensus on Hissarlik. It COULD be Troy, but there is literally not a single piece of evidence that can confirm the name of the city. The end of the video completely loses it.
I always like the Trojans more.
This is like, the one time in history where we assumed something was just a legend, and it actually had some truth to it.
D'oh!
Of all the Greek Hero-Kings, why name your kid after Agamemnon? I mean, I know basically none of them were great people but Agamemnon seemed to go out of his way to be a jerk about everything.
Calling Patroclus Achillis' comrade and partner instead of lover … You cowards!
The dynamite anecdote is one of those things that genuinely makes me wonder if the average IQ was about 50 points lower a few centuries ago. A toddler could explain to why blowing up a site would result in the site being blown up.
Anyone has link of the 2nd video
Sounds like a credible source for Troy.
I think Odysseus Committed a War Crime
so thats why ist aghillys heel
Let's be crystal clear here. Schliemann was NOT an archaeologist. He was a looter. His careless methods and later behavior betray this fact.
Odysseus the goat
My favorite archaeological technique
ultraviolence
A really small bu timportant thingy
Paris or Apollo killed Achilles with a poisoned arrow not just by piercing his heel with a regular arrow
10:11 minotaur? You mean cyclops right?! Right?!
Yeah, there actually is another way to describe Shliemann. He was an asshole. Ask any classical archeologist. Dude was an ignorant asshole, not an archeologist.
For all their gentlemanly bravado, they would have plundered Jesus's tomb if given the chance.
