I use it because being in the uk is restrictive due to European law so I like to use an American server this also gives my Netflix account the American content which gives me more choice.
There is no online privacy, the premise is is that intelligence/military and policing are two separate streams. Secret information given to the police cannot be used in criminal court. presumably
