1. This may seem like a silly question, but I am not a network engineer and want to make sure I understand the point of setting up the VPN server on my DS.

   If I am connecting to my DS on my LAN I don’t need this. Correct? (ie my pc that is connected via ethernet cable to my network).

   However, If I am not connected to my LAN on something like my laptop at a friends how this is when I would want to connect via the VPN? Right?

2. Does this make it so I can use
   My home internet connection securely from public or office Wifi?

4. how do i create a network using vpn so as other android users can connect onto my server when i give them account to log in… into the vpn and i have the control panel

5. Would have been a better video if you had taken your time, spoken more slowly and not skipped over several important details that would have been useful to people that need help. For example, there was nothing here about client software or coping with dynamic IP addresses.
   By the way, it's a "Server" or a "NAS" or "Synology NAS", not a "Synology".
   EDIT – Just read through the comments and it seems many other people feel the same way – too lacking in detail to be useful.

6. Do you know if it's possible to do a OpenVPN site to site vpn on Synology?

7. I can connect my VPN on a Mac client, but it won't connect to my home network (my home Mac is not in the finder) how can my Macbook see my iMac at home through this VPn service?

8. Hi Willie, thanks for the video, qq, in the openVPN zip file, there is the readme, config & a ca cert. I get that the config get copied in and edited, but what happens with the cert. file? where does that go please?

11. Willie – useful video thank you. I'm a guy who is just migrating from a WD My Cloud to a Synology. All the hardware is in various stages of arriving, nothing is setup etc. I'm just doing my pre-setup homework and have seen a lot of chatter in r/synology that you shouldn't leave your NAS directly connected to internet and should use VPN instead. So I plan to use OpenVPN on SynologyNAS VPN server and your video gives me the road map to do that. My questions:
    (1) Is this VPN server one that I would use ONLY to access my Synology Shares and my local LAN or is it also a VPN which I could use from public wifi at Starbucks / Hotels etc to improve my security?
    (2) Can I avoid paying for ExpressVPN or alternatives if I use this Synology VPN server?

15. Does the Site to Site Auto VPN use the same ports for IPSec? I get an error message: There was an error saving the port forwarding changes. Port forward conflicts with IPsec (ports 500 and 4500).

16. Thanks for this, Willie. I switched from using a USG Pro to a pfSense box and couldn't get L2TP/IPsec to work with my Android phone (it was easy with the UniFi interface). I was back in business in a few minutes after using the VPN server on my DS718+.

17. Great video. The only issue is the ending. I would like to have seen you actually set up the VPN tunnel on a client machine and see the connection established with the VPN tunnel (from the point of view of someone connecting to the network).

23. Hi Willie. I am purchasing the asus RT-AC88U router and was going to set up VPN server on that device to access the home LAN. will that method allow me to still access the Synology securely? The synology will appear as a lettered network drive on my laptop.

30. Hi Willie,
    With OpenVPN I had to set up my internal DNS. and also config my gateway (if I want to get out to the net via my home-stuff). Otherwise I could not reach my internal servers with FQDM.

31. Now the real question… can the synology openvpn server easily be modified to allow for a ta.key Tls and other hardening features?
