  1. this was great video and passed it on to a few people, I did like the generlink unit and about turning breakers off to support your load or balanced, but did wish you would have added a bit on your whole hose load needs balanced on both legs if your doing generlink which would be 240volts and you would have brung up about unbonded & bonded generator and about floating ground and dummy plug on generator where you can make or buy where a wire is run inside pug from ground terminal and neutral terminal , and about manual transfer switch that is 120 volts or a 240 transfer switch then this video would be perfect !!!

  2. I have a main disconnect at my panel. I have a large generator in my garage. When the power goes out for any length of time I first disconnect the power from the pole and then start up the generator. The power from the generator feeds the main panel thru my welder circuit. (60 amps). The longest I've had to run my generator is 5 days. With a full tank of gas the generator will run for 12-13 hours depending on usage. In 20 years I've only had to run the generator for multiple days 3 times. I've used it with my welder to provide mobile welding more that that. My one piece of advice I would give is to purchase your generator at a time when there is no emergency. You don't need a generator the size of mine. I purchased mine at a time of emergency and by the time I got to Lowes all the small generators were gone. That said, I'm glad I have the bigger one now. When we had a power pole that snapped there were on 4 of us that lost power. I was able to power up not only my house, but my neighbors as well. Everybody's situation is different. Chose what's right for you. And first and foremost, be safe. Being in the dark won't kill you but screwing around with electricity if you don't know what you are doing can kill you.

  3. This jackazz has no idea what hes talking about. I have a 5600 peak WATT generator. I powered my entire 3,500 sqft house with 2 refrigerators, 240v a.c., 240v water pump, 240v stove, and the microwave. You only really need about around 4000 running watts in a typical house.

  4. The other option is to install a manual transfer switch right before the main panel. Then you can select either utility or generator power, and you are not restricted to any particular brand of breakers. I have seen 100 amp rated ones but I have to do more research for bigger ones. I have seen people spent over $10Gs for a turn key automatic system, as a electrician, that is against our religion. What we are most likely to do is to just back feed the dryer or stove outlets. Just be sure the main switch / main breaker is off , even the dryer outlet will work with a 7000 watt generator. I be happy with just 3000watts if not, I will parallel two 2000 watt units, but I will lose a little wattage doing that.(more like 3850 watts) It is best these units are chained to something substantial in the back yard and guarded by a couple of big dogs. They are a prime target for thieves.

  5. You don't need to hire an electrician to install the gentran panel. You can do it yourself as long as you are competent and follow the NEC.

  6. It's been 2 years since I checked: since the generlink would have to be installed under the meter I contacted my local electrical utility (PUD).
Quoting from the email "Thank you for your inquiry regarding the installation of a GenerLink automatic transfer switch. Washington State’s Labor & Industries’ Chief Electrical Inspector has advised that this product does not meet the appropriate electrical standards in Washington State. They have identified that the manufacturer’s instructions and UL file are in conflict with pertinent NEC and RCW requirements."

  7. Be very careful people. Remember these type of generators give what they call dirty electric or square wave. All ur new appliances have very delicate circuitry and will cause damage for sure. Ur appliances need pure since wave. Do ur research people.

  8. In my market, generlink costs 5x what a 10 circuit transfer box costs. It also can only be installed by Hydro so my estimate of cost is not $ but $$$$$ (if it is legal at all). Also, it's more work each time to select and turn off unnecessary breakers so the generator won't overload. The selection of the size of transfer switch and manageable circuits is done once only at design/setup for a transfer switch.

I think the transfer switch is a far, far better option. I was able to install a 10 circuit transfer box myself for $400 all in.

  9. I'm using a manual transfer switch ($319 Amazon, self-installed) with off-grid solar and batteries to enhance my electrical system, allowing the use of both at the same time. This leaves me with the generator port should I wish to enhance the solar/batteries when the grid is down. // I would never consider a generlink due to its limitations. // The last option you forgot to include is an automatic transfer switch which flips the circuits to generator from grid, then powers the generator on when the power goes out. Add a grand to the manual transfer switch price for automatic.

  10. Just wire the generator to your wiring panel and use 2 circuit breakers. When the power goes out just flip the main OFF and the generator breakers ON. My whole house has the power this way. This has been running for me for years. Great video though!

  11. With a generlink or transfer switch is 240v avaible? If I wanted to use my hot water tank with nothing else on, would it work…maybe if I only ran it with one element? If the power were off for over 3days or so.

  12. ON theft…I heard a story here in fla where a thief took a lawnmower fired it up stole the generator so owner wouldn't notice the lack of noise. Wow now that;s thinking

  13. What I run in emergency.
    1 fridge
2 I run low wattage appliances like Power Pressure cooker Xl, Insta pot, air fryer and microwave.

Note Pressure cooker will kill bacteria in water if there is a boil water alert.

    Oh and an electric heater.

  14. Be careful with the portable generators that are not "inverter generators" they have issues with blowing out anything that has electronics (most newer refrigerators, freezers, dryers, TVs, stereos etc.) Most appliances have electronics that need 60Hz Perfect Sine wave (not modified) and if your generator fluctuation is more than 1%-2% you may ruin your electronics.

  15. if I had the power company remove all their poles/wires/meter from my property so there is no possibility of backfeed, can I legally hook the generator directly to my meter(less) pole if I cover the meter socket for safety? may be a stupid question, but there are many stupid laws as well.
