  1. Thanks for the tip on the cloning and fan control software. Can you recommend the external drive case to use while cloning the SSD? Yours with the slot in it to just plug into was cool, but any model that would work would be appreciated!

  2. I am going to do this with my old iMac this weekend. Any troubles with just “readhering” the thermal sensor? Does it works as normal? I have seen some forums where the fan basically goes constant after this.

  3. Hey! I know this is an older video, but I recently saw a tutorial of someone doing the same thing on an early 2009 20" iMac and they said that the Hard Drive Temperature Sensor wouldn't work after swapping in the SSD so you would have to create a custom fan curve. Did you have this issue?

  4. I have an early 2008 20 inch iMac currently running Yosemite 10.10.5. Which version of OS X is best for it? I heard Mavericks was a good option and I thought about downgrading to it. Also, how much RAM can it have? Apple says 4 GB max but I've read in forums saying you can put 6 GB in it.

  5. There are a ton of adapter brackets out there. I used this one on mine:

There are obviously cheaper and more expensive options out there. This is just one example.

For those that don't have luck with the software, they have hardware duplicators, like this one:

The advantage is you can clone any OS with it, including Windows, Mac OS etc. Remove the Source drive and put the drive into the Source bay. Put the new drive into the Target bay, select Copy, and press the Start button. I have yet to see it fail to clone anything (except encrypted drives).

The only restriction is, the Target drive will have to be equal size or larger to the source drive. No matter how much data is on the drive, if you clone a 512GB drive, your target drive has to be 512GB or larger, no matter if it is only 10% full.

In the video, he was able to clone a larger 1TB drive to a smaller 256GB drive using the software. Since the cloner uses track to track copy, there have to be equal or larger number of tracks on the Target drive.

  6. My Imac 2010 21.5 hard drive factory is very corrupted and no rescue disk. I want to know which best quality ssd drive to a Imac 2010 21.5 be compatible and the hard drive fan not working at all. And I'm afraid to do it by myself of repairs. I find it difficult. Please help…

  7. When I get to the part in Super Duper where I select the SSD to copy to it the new SSD does not show. It does, however, appear in Disk Utility.

  8. I just clone the drives using the built-in Apple disk utility by using the restore option. Free and no download needed. 🙂

  9. can you please tell me where did you get the bracket? I am planing to do the same for early 2009 24'' Imac. What about the heat sensor .. does it work? People have told me I will have to use software to control it. Thnx!

  10. Nice job, and great video.

I noticed you are running a version of macOS that can do GarageBand. Need 10.12 or later to run that, right?

I'm bringing a 2008 imac back to life after it was sitting on a curb all lonely like and probably about to be crushed in a trash truck. So far it's doing quite well… I am watching this video and it's smooth with just 1GB of memory. (4GB are on the way)

So I was under impression this imac can only be upgraded as high as 10.11 El Captain.

So, there must be some way to get it to 10.12?

I would love to have GarageBand on here.

  11. Thank you. This was a very helpful video. Took me about an hour to complete the install. I did not bother to disconnect the main board. Just the dvd and camera then propped the screen open with a stick. It’s now between 30 – 50% faster depending on the app and it’s a useful pc again.

  12. it seems like you're using a newer macOS version than officialy supported, is it right? If so, can you tell me how you made this happen? 😀

  13. Actually wouldn't the easiest way be to use an external enclosure that supports Thunderbolt 3, put the SSD in that, clone the internal drive to it and then set it as your boot drive? That's what I've done. Opening up the machine seemed a bit too extreme for my DIY tastes, it looks so much more complicated than working on a machine on the WinPC side. I dunno when TB3 came in to the iMac's but I think I would still take an SSD over USB 3.1 over opening it up, for me anyway.

If my machine was out of warranty like yours was then I think I'd go on the adventure and try it. I may have to actually, because when I bought it I only chose 8GB of RAM because I expected it to be user-replaceable like other models, I didn't look too carefully before ordering. Unfortunately my RAM is always all used up within 2-3 hours of turning the machine on, I don't even have that much open.

  14. Okay, so instead of paying for extra tech to put all of your stuff on the disk, you could just make a bootable drive. You can then put Mac OS onto the new drive after you've installed it. Also, it would be a better idea to be a little bit more careful with the LCD screen, fingerprints show up easily. I did like you made this a very cheap, and inexpensive project.

  15. So first you have to back up your mac to the eternal HDD then do the ssd upgrade? Also is there any way to uograde an old 2008 imac 2.0 usb to 3.0 most external drives are now 3.0 or better do they make a converter?
