hi — it is April 2018 and i have a pomegranate tree that has been growing in the ground for about 3 years now — would it still be okay to cut its trunk (still very thin&small) and if so, when in the season should i do this? i am in northern california too.
thank you to anyone who knows the answer!! (:
I have a pretty big branch coming out about 2 inches above the graft point (which makes it about 9-10 inches off the ground), and it has a bunch of new branches on it.. I read you should cut anything off close to the ground but it looks like if I cut that off, it'll remove about half the total area of the top part of the peach tree. Should I leave that on and use it as a lateral branch?
I purchased my peach tree to you guys last year, when should I prune the peach tree?
what if i dont cut the trunk and only cut thre lateral unwanted branches would the tree be the same or no
What about pruning fruit trees that are older? We have citrus [dwarf and mature], apples, plums, apricots and peach trees that were here when we moved in 5 years ago. We planted an plum 2 years ago, so it is the youngest.
my peach tree has tiny golf ball size peach. what you think I am doing wrong
You label the branches you want to keep! You certainly were an excellent elementary school pupil! Greetings from Athens, Greece!
Thanks so much for the videos. I am new to south California and wanted to learn more about how you all prune and fertilize your fruit trees. I was surprised you dont follow the moon cycle to prune. I have always prune in the waning moon to get better results. Why do you not follow the moon to prune??
Thanks for this video. I had took pruning easy and made mistakes and only realized after a year or so. You have really educated me. Thank you.
Thank you. We recently added subtitles to this video. On the YouTube control bar on the far right click the "CC" button to turn the subtitles on. I hope that is helpful, good luck with you English listening.
at the outset these program very nice I m from turkey and engaged in english listening I wish that those your brodcasts were with english subtitles
We actually have a whole video on pruning cherry trees in summer which is a good watch. The short answer is to prune them after they fruit. Cherry trees do well pruned to open vase or modified central leader.
So what part of summer should we prune a cherry tree? Won't the sun damage it or is it the lesser of two evils? Thanks!!!
Thanks, enjoy your trees!
Absolutely the best fruit tree pruning video ever…you've made it simple and easy! Thank you so much X Now…to the orchard!
Also, I have older trees now. They were pruned when I bought them from Stark's Bros. Is there anything I need to know before I prune? My branches are crowded, and I pruned last year…
Tricia, I see that when you prune you also take off some of the length. How much would you say you take off, a third? I have a big problem with over-production of the fruit, and the branches break. Last year even though I thinned, I must have not done enough because I still had broken branches. Please can you give me some pointers? I do so love my fruit trees, which I keep pesticides off of.
Anytime before the tree blooms. Walnuts should be pruned as soon as they go dormant. Apricots and cherries should be pruned only in summer in areas with a wet winter. Peaches, nectarines and plums should be pruned later in the dormant season, usually about late January, early February. Apples and pears can be pruned as late as May or April in many areas. You can also prune during the summer for size control.
If that type of cut was done on an older tree it would damage the tree; it's called topping. But that type of cut at 2:22 is university recommended for training young trees to an open center. At 2 years old the bottom of the trunk is still actively growing. The cut at 1:50 is a thinning cut so we cut it back to the branch collar to remove an undesirable branch. The cut where there is some branch left is a heading cut to stimulate more branching on the desired scaffold branches.
I was always taugh that cutting the trunk off where you did it 2:22 in the video that goes actaully Damages the tree bc believe it or not the tree grows from the top up not the bottom so cutting it from top up thought ruins the structer and stops top from growing & even ruins the look so why did you do that. that part didnt make sense to me & when you cut the branches off i thought your suppose to cut a little closer then u did if you look 1:50 sec in this video shows 1/4 to 1/2 of branch still
In the latter part of the video she is kneeling. Sorry it is unclear with the edit, this was the second video we did. In the very last shot you'll notice the tree is headed to her waist.
Tricia, Why do you cut the main trunk about the heigth of your nose when you just told us to cut the main trunk between your knees and your waist?
You said Winter time. So that means anytime before Spring or is there a favourite month to do the pruning?
Peach leaf curl can be dealt with by planting resistant varieties (Q-1-8, Indian Free, Frost, Muir) or treating with a dormant spray labeled to control peach leaf curl.
Can you say something about peach leaf curl?
go yo your local 99 cent store and buy cheap plastic food bowls and slit it will a saw and useing a knife bore hole to trunk size. they work great for penneys
Prune them at the time of planting, and then in summer if you want to maintain a smaller tree.
If I plant my apple trees in January, how soon after that should I prune them? Thanks for all you videos!
Hi Trisha!
Thanks!
They are to prevent girdling by rabbits and other critters and mechanical damage from weed whackers.
@BackyardDiscoveryCo You're welcome. Yes, it's recommended to wait until the summer, usually around June to prune your cherries.
Thx for telling me about no pruning cherry trees…
