  1. I absolutely hate painting because I'm a talentless piece of shit and I often procrastinate for weeks watching other people videos instead of actually painting. I know I will never achieve even one thousandth of the skill those people possess. So I prefer just to drink myself to death, eat Prozac and cry in the shower wishing for sweet release of death because I'm such a coward I can't even commit suicide. Also my brush control sucks.

  2. For space marines, I paint white and black where it belongs for shadows, then blend a bit to make gray areas. Then while it's still kinda wet I use a pretty thin gel paint over it. Mostly tested it on terrian casualty marines, it works good enough to be enjoyable

  3. I know how you feel I’m in the middle of batch painting an army at the minute , 43 primaris try doing 86 shoulder pads lol . Good vid mimiac

  4. Perhaps you're painting because you have to not because you want to and your lack of enjoyment is simply what a lot of people feel when they turn a hobby into a job.

  5. speed up this video 2X

edit: I commented as soon as i thought of this wicked dis. after watching, the production value in the vid is bigly. very nice!

  6. If you want to enjoy your hobby, why to paint everything separated?.. if you want to compete or something with high quality maybe, but as hobby you want to give life to your project… spare parts dont give that feelinh

  7. Your hobby is now your job.

    That has an impact.

Also, purpose drives you. What is your next goal? I am a musician and there is nothing more exhilarating than playing live with other musicians. Sadly, most of the time I spend with my instrument is practicing and composing and grinding, but I found enjoyment in that grind because I know that it helps me express myself creatively. I think the painting hobby is similar in some ways. There is always a great project to strive for and there is incredible effort in getting it done right.

Im sure Steve Vai finds daily practice the most boring thing in the world… but every concert is amazing!

Whats your next "concert" Scott? 🙂 is there an equivalent? something that makes even the painting process with details something enjoyable because you are looking forward to that "concert"?

What a terrible analogy, why am I like this?

    Paint more minis.

  8. I find it odd that you enjoy so little of the painting process. Unless it's more of act that I would have guessed, you appear to have a passion for painting. How do you continue to find the drive for something it sounds like you enjoy so little? You made it your full-time job, have you begun to like it less the more you do it?

  9. Maybe you're trying too hard. It doesn't have to be all fun, it should be tough if you want to get to a skill level but I have the most fun when I don't bother painting in overly complicated ways.

  10. … I have much better advice. Buy an airbrush. You can get really good iwatas for 100 AUD. You can very easily prime smoothly, basecoat and blend many pieces of armour for an entire army.each panel in secs for each stage.

  11. I find myself often jumping into a painting project without much of a paint plan. I get started then end up painting over large segments of the figure with a completely different color. It's time consuming and often frustrating seeing how so much time and effort, effectively, went to waste. At the same time I find it to be an enjoyable part of the painting process as I see it as a creative exploration of the model. My initial idea doesn't "fit" once I finally start applying paint. I do probably need to plan out my projects better though as the amount of time it takes to get something completed is far too long, and completing a model is my biggest joy in this hobby.

  12. Speed is an illusion. Any artist that works really fast doesn't do so by waving the brush quickly, they work fast because they know their process really well.

  13. I remember reading a book by the alpine-legend Reinhold Messner, who is also kind of a philosophical figure. His advice would absolutly be to not look for "fun" in the things which are important to you. He writes that when you reach the peak of a mountain in the death-zone, there is never euphoria and the climbing isnt joyful, either. That comes afterwards and you already have the next project in mind at that point. I get what he is saying. Fun is easy, just switch on your Playstation or have a beer with friends. I mean, painting is not very high up my personal priority list, but i always felt that "hobby" is kind of a diminishing term for people who really put a lot of inspiration and artistry and energy into the process. If you just do it for fun and its no longer fun to you, just get a new videogame and leave it be. But if you paint because that is a expressive and productive process for you, dont worry about having fun.

Btw, thanks for the video, the last spacemareeeen i painted took me about two months, the next one with the same standart is at a similar lvl after 3 weeks, so this really resonated with me 🙂

  14. This was an excellent video. First off, props on the effective and artistic use of B-roll and other cinematic tricks and tools. I know most of us are here for the essence of the content, but your delivery method was spot on, so, kudos! Next, I'm someone who's in the 9-10 category of enjoyment. I love all aspects of it, and cant wait for my next chance to sit down and go to work. That being said, for me, the need to reduce the time spent doesn't come from a boredom/love-lost angle, but more of a time/effect side. I only have, at best, 2 hours a night I can potentially paint. I want to get more done during that time, or my commissions will take FOREVER. This was great to watch and hopefully I can implement it soon! Thanks Scott!

  15. I definitely notice that I take a lot longer to paint when I'm experimenting or trying a new colour scheme. When I'm painting Yet Another Batch of Beastmen, I know exactly what I'm doing and don't require as much faffing about. But then, I think I enjoy the faffing about and seeing a new colour scheme come to life, that's why I love painting various different things in between batches of the army I'm working on.

  16. Great video I'd say; the problem with hobbies is that you MUST enjoy it, otherwise it just becomes a chore – or in the case of youtubers, another work task.

Me, I'm just a hobbyist so I can leave my painting whenever I feel like it and just play videogames instead until the lust for painting gets back (I left Descent in a half-painted mode for over a month since I didn't feel like it). Not so easy for domeone who has to make videos…

That said, I think key to enjoyment is also knowing what it is for – for tabletop games just paint well enough and be done – the expression tabletop standard exist for a reason. But if you paint for competitions (which I personally detest) or unique collector models, then take your time, be excited for the model and enjoy it.

  17. I liked the video, I'm looking forward to more videos on "reclaiming your hobby". Maybe it was just me but I think I understood what the difference between the two painting styles were, it was just a little un-clear. Then just a personal experience in the "reclaim your hobby". I used to do graphic design, took classes for it and I loved it, once I started doing graphic design for other people as work though it took away a lot of freedom I had and I hated it. Maybe you just need to paint more minis for yourself and not YouTube. Just a thought, keep up the good work!
