This reminds me somewhat of a short story I read around 35 years ago when someone had stowed away on a space-going transport craft. In that story the craft didn't carry enough fuel to compensate for the weight of the stow away passenger. The pilot tried everything he could think of to lighten the load, but in the end physics is physics, and its cold logical laws are unalterable. Mercy and feelings sometimes don't apply.

I do love how they are so dramatic about we only got enough oxygen for 3 ppl and we have no help, but you do have help, Misson control are just a radio call away and also you got 20 days to solve it that is plenty of time.
