  1. 1. YOU CANNOT TURN OFF YOUR PHONE OR YOUR IPAD, EXCEPT WHEN IT RUNS OUT OF BATTERY COMPLETELY.

    2. THEY WILL LISTEN TO YOU EVEN IF YOU TURN OFF YOUR MODEM.

    3. EVEN IF YOU TURN OFF THE ACCESS TO ALL NETWORK SIGNALS ON YOUR PHONE, OTHER WEBS NEARBY AUTOMATICALLY ATTATCH TO YOUR PHONE WITH OUT YOU EVEN KNOWING.

4.YOUR PHONE IS A PERMANENT INTERNET CONNECTION AND TRACKING DEVICE.

  2. What irks me a lot is how Facebook (Google is guilty of this too) will take something from a private Messenger chat with a friend, and make it an ad in Facebook. The other day I was chatting about travelling to Europe — a private chat — and then got an ad the same day for a company that helps you get a European passport. We have had others before that have just been related to verbal chats. Happens far too frequently for my liking. Also happens too across the big tech players — part of a Gmail message ends up being a Facebook ad topic.

  3. It also could be due to marketing strategies that rely on recommending products and services to profiles that have a lot in common. As an example you and your friend share a lot of common interests. If your friend is doing a lot of searches for fishing rods, you may also get served up ads for fishing rods. 🙂

  4. I was speaking with my friends and it was either spring or summer, and they mentioned someone passing away in a skiing accident, and that night I got an Instagram story ad for skiing

  5. I don't think it's the smartphone, it's social media. I am not active on these platforms myself and I never receive unwanted advertising. There are smart speakers in the living room and on all floors and never had any problems with suspicious advertising.

  6. I think a lot of people get ads for things they've only talked about because of what their friends are doing. "I was talking about the new Porsche with my friend Joe and now I'm seeing Porsche ads." Yeah, and has Joe been looking at Porsche related-content online? Social networks allow advertisers to see connections between people and infer interests in similar topics. Of course there are some nefarious apps that listen to people, I'm not discounting that. But I, for example, see all kinds of recommended posts and ads on Instagram that are at least in part influenced by what my friends are doing on the platform.

  7. Yes. Two days ago I had papercut. While washing it, my friend ask what is going on. I said I got a cut (in Malay language, not English). After the bleeding stopped, I reached my phone in my pocket and open random YouTube video. Suddenly an ad about bandage being shown at me. Only few minutes between the two incidents.

  8. So what if I discover that my phone is listening to my conversations? What can I do about it? It would be much more useful to advise what to do to prevent such incidents than to suggest testing it for days.

  9. I did this it's gotten really bad recently though. To the point where really inappropriate things are being advertised on my phone. Clearly I talk way too much.

  10. No idea if it was my phone or computer listening but they other day my son start singing itsy bitsy spider song and I went to google to find a video; I had no idea of the name of the song so I type “spid” and automatically google complete it with spider song itsy bitsy…. Was kind of freaky hahaha

  11. This is just nonsense. If you speak into the google mic and ask then maybe it could happen, but not when its turned off.

  12. I lost my brother last year to acute pancreatitis. It was unexpected. Just two days later, Amazon prime, without precedent, recommended documentaries all relating to, the afterlife, death, what happens when we die, etc. It was very disturbing.

  13. I was talking with my friends about when we are old we could all go to the same nursing home and have fun till we die. One friend started getting ads for nursing homes! At 40 years old!

  14. It's best to do two tests, one where you are on wifi and one where you are only on cellular data. There is also a setting on android where you can disconnect your phone from wifi while locked which used to significantly help minimize phone spying. The other method for corporate spying is through the auto fill feature of your keyboard. I have had ads come up from topics I have only discussed on encrypted communication apps. The primary offenders seems to be the typical big players in tech and the stock market

  15. On Mother's Day, My wife commented that she needed a hat pin. Next time she used the phone there were ads for hat pins on Facebook.
Facebook will listen to your conversations without actually "recording" them. Then the app pulls certain words from those digitized words are uses them to post ads. It is in their End User Agreement!

  16. Of course they are listening, the #1 weapon in all forms of war or spying is information… I think everyone should do what the government does and just lie all the time…

  17. We were talking about life insurance with some co workers. Following day, started receiving adds on Facebook about life insurance. 🥵

  18. Great article, NordVPN! Unfortunately it seems our private moments are no more private at all even when disabling the microphone on the phone and also the phone motion sensors (motion gestures) that could possibly switch the microphone back on, like for instance an app that you installed for an emergency situation to alert EMS, etc. Some phones even have the quick settings for changing how pressing certain buttons on the phone will enable it again.

Ultimately, IMO internet neutrality is the main issue that companies like Facebook can simply ignore bcs they are "untouchable" and they can then resell the collected data to another company "legally" and so it continues. Even typing a mere text on your phone's keypad in any app can be recorded and used. Thank you for a great product though. 👍

  19. I work at a grocery store there was 3 of us co workers talking about this bottle of tequila that we just got in selling for $140 the most expensive bottle we have. Next day 2 out of 3 of us were on Facebook and it popped up in the feed for a ad… That's not coincidence that is proof some how someone is listening through the phone…

  20. I think Nord VPN is listening in on me. I have an Alaska trip coming up next week. Then Nord VPN makes a YouTube video about phones listening to your conversation and uses an Alaska trip as an example. Coincidence? I think not! 🤣😂

  21. Literally one time I was thinking about playing fortnite again after a year and then later I saw tiktok videos and youtube ads about fortnite. Later I decided to start playing another game then later I saw an ad about the game and tiktok videos about the game….

  22. I’ve noticed that Siri will not respond when in my pocket no matter how loud I bellow so guess that muffles the mic pretty well. However if I really want to have a private conversation say about something commercially sensitive I will not have a phone or other mic containing device anywhere in the room!

  23. Here’s another experiment to see if your phone is reading your thoughts. Try to not speak of the thing you’re wanting to manifest, do not research it but if it comes up in your Al Gore Rythms just watch with no comment and continue but notice the thoughts and feelings around what is offered or served and how it might evolve as you’re awareness on the subject grows
