How To Install & Play Fallout 3 On Linux – Steam Proton Experimental Method

This video covers installing and running Fallout 3 on Linux using Steam Proton.

https://www.protondb.com/app/22300

Step 1. Install Steam and Enable Proton Experimental.

Install Steam, sign into your account, navigate to Steam / Settings / Steam Play and tick both Enable Steam Play for supported titles and Enable Steam Play for all other titles.

This should choose Proton Experimental as the default build which is what we want.

Restart Steam when prompted.

Step 2. Install The Game.

From here install the game as normal, launch and then exit.

This will create the Fallout.ini file required for the next step.

Step 3. Fix Mouse Acceleration.

The high mouse acceleration in menus can be fixed by adding the following to the Fallout.ini file.

[Controls]
fForegroundMouseAccelBase=0
fForegroundMouseAccelTop=0
fForegroundMouseBase=0
fForegroundMouseMult=0

The Fallout.ini file can be found at the following location.

Home / .steam / steam / steamapps / compatdata / 22370 / pfx / drive_c / users / steamuser / My Documents / My Games / Fallout3

Step 4. Set 60FPS Framerate Limit.

Like many older Bethesda games that use the Creation Engine, game animations are tied to the framerate, and exceeding 60FPS will break certain parts of the game, so it is recommended to set a frame limit of 60FPS.

The easiest method to do this is by using the below command in the game’s custom launch options.

DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%

Once all of this done, finally launch the game as normal.

  1. how do I play the GOG version? this is for the steam version but I just bought the game on GOG today, my older laptop has LMDE 5 installed on it and my new gaming laptop that runs windows has a hard time just getting 40FPS at medium-low graphics settings (close to xbox 360 graphics) because the battery bay is empty so the GPU and CPU are slow.

  2. I tried editing the registry for FO3, because the required registry keys needed to launch weren't present. But it still shows up that I need to install the game from the DVD. I had this problem with FO:NV, but it apparently fixed itself. I was going to post this on reddit, but the r/linuxgaming subreddit isn't primarily for tech support. Any help towards me would be appreciated.

  3. Hey I'm having a sound issue. The music on the radio skips after like 5 seconds and when have a shootout the game drops so much fps. Any tip?

  4. they must have updated it somehow. I did all you shown, but it freezes heavily. Sometimes after few minutes(say 10), sometimes after one minute. Literary unplayable.

  5. Hi man.. I got a question. I've done all the things i could and my game still crashes after starting 'new game' or loading a existing safe file.. I've added the .dll and edited the .ini. I'm runnning Manjaro xfce. Have you got any further tips on what i can try..? tnks in advance

  6. hello
    i have fallout 3 (not the game of the year edition)
    i can't find fallout.ini , there is only "falloutprefs.ini" wich can't be used to do the following modifications.

  7. I have pretty much tried everything the internet had to offer to get Fallout 3 to work on Windows 10 and it would still just die but after I switched to Linux and saw your video Fallout 3 just works now!

  8. Hi! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. However, I did all the steps, but the game is still not launching. I managed to get to 'start new game' menu and it quits. I'm using Arco Linux (a version of Arch).
