  1. He means world's fastest steam locomotives. The fastest steam engine on land was the Stanley Steam car that achieved a world record 127.7mph on sand at Daytona Beach in 1906. Driven by Fred Marriott. Estimated speed of 15omph in 1907 before the front end lifted and the car crashed. Google it and be amazed.

  2. You mentioned that LMS Stanier Pacifics, among others, were trialled on rival's routes (presumably the LNER's East Coast route), but then only describe the maintenance problems of the LNER Gresley Pacifics. Can you tell us how the larger and more powerful Stanier Pacifics fared?

  3. Here's a hint: if you can't say "fliegender", say "flying". It's the same word. We know what you mean. Which is more than can be said when you mangle the German pronunciation – then nobody understands you.

    Same as Starbucks droids saying "cruh-SAWNT" instead of croissant. Just say "crescent" if you can't say the French word.

    In both cases, the pronunciation of the English word is closer to the pronunciation of the foreign word than your mangled effort!

  4. A wonderful trip down memory lane. My own personal memory of my one and only encounter of the A-4 Pacifics was the summer of 1954 some where near the east England town of Scunthorpe. I was on the platform with my Cousin Shelia and her husband when one of these engines came barrelling through the station whistle going full blast. It frightened me so much that I flew under Shelia's skirt and hung onto her legs for dear life and shrieking in terror. I was the age 4 and still remember it to this day. My wife insists it caused caused other problems but we won't go into that today. :o)

  6. What's not to like, that was truly brilliant and brought tears to my eyes, especially when the bloke was smoking in the cafe car and also all the stations totally smogged out! God knows what we are doing wrong this moment in history but so what, your and mine engines are all that matters!
    Thought the French were clever doing articulated carriages for Eurostar, just proves what little I know!!!

  7. Not trying to be a smart arse but it is generally accepted , and verified elsewhere on the net that Mallard attained a top speed of 126 mph. I know theres only 1mph difference but accuracy is everything .Great video.

There were many who wanted to see one of Stanier's Princess Coronation class locos- one of which- 6220 Coronation had hit 114mph in 1937 (before being massively slowed to avoid coming off the rails at Crewe on a crossover) being given a run down Stoke Bank on the East Coast Mainline where the record was made to try and raise it. However, British Railways was not interested in doing something to publicise steam locomotives when the organisation was busy planning to scrap this form of traction.

  10. If BR never dieselized and gave their steam engines the care they needed, the A4s might still be in service. Much like the Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 or Norfolk & Western J-class on this side of the pond.
